"My name is Lou Harrison and in October 2010 I was diagnosed with follicular lymphoma (lymphatic cancer) after having been unwell for some time.
Some people are diagnosed early with this kind of cancer and are treated very effectively. A lot more, like me, don't find out about their cancer until it's more advanced. At the moment there are treatments for lymphoma in its later stages but there isn't a cure yet, although things are moving on quickly.
The diagnosis was a blow, but from the start I was determined to stay as well as possible for as long as possible so that I can be part of the celebrations when a cure is found in the future. I spent a lot of time researching ways to help myself stay well - making sure that on a daily basis I get lots of exercise, sunshine, meditation and restful sleep, for example, and following a very nutritious, wholly vegetarian and usually vegan diet. I feel very well most of the time, although my health regime is quite demanding! Sometimes the fatigue can be tricky to manage, but when I'm able to keep these aspects of my life healthily balanced I feel great.
The other consideration is the need to keep my lifestyle as free of toxins as I can. The causes of lymphoma are still unclear, but many people think that it could be related to chemicals in the environment. Some have suggested that it might be caused by using dark hair dye, for instance. One of the books I read recommended removing cleaning chemicals from around the house, but since we've always tried to be green that wasn't hard to achieve! It was much harder to resolve a dilemma that gradually developed around my choice of skin and hair products. I've always bought products that weren't tested on animals, and I usually bought them from a well-known brand and chain of shops that sells more natural products. In fact, that brand was specifically recommended in a book that suggested avoiding all parabens to help to slow the growth of cancer. It was several months before I discovered that many of the products I was using actually had parabens hidden in the small-print ingredients lists.
This started a search for products I could actually trust, but many of the ones that I tracked down felt sticky, smelled funny, didn't do what I needed them to do… And, in fact, at times like this you really value the things that make you feel special and pampered – products that work, and that smell and feel really good. Most importantly they make me feel good and I know that nothing about them is putting my health at risk."
